Health Coaching utilizes a broad-spectrum approach to Wellness, incorporating an individual’s entire person and lifestyle. Sleep, food, time off, relationships, expression of emotions, career, caffeine, sugar, thinking patterns, etc – it all relates. Health Coaching helps people experience accelerated growth in directions that they choose based on the life they really want.
Benefits of Health Coaching are that it emphasizes the individual and focuses on one’s entire life, the “Big Picture.” Clients may experience these benefits:

- Increased food and nutrition knowledge
- Desire to take responsibility for their health
- Increased energy and vitality
- Improved immune function
- Reduced allergies
- Weight reduction
- Lower stress levels
- Improved relationships
- Reduced cravings
- Overall empowerment and wellness.
There are a few limitations that Health Coaches face. One limitation is that it is still finding its place in the health and wellness arenas. In addition, for a complex world, Health Coaching is low-tech. There are no labs or drug prescriptions, no diagnosis, no “diets.” It is about listening, learning, patience, goal setting and motivation.
There are various avenues one might take to become a Health Coach. Holistic Health Counseling is one avenue – it takes a year or more to become certified, with the designation HHC. There are a number of schools that provide certification, and the best resource for additional information is the website for the American Association of Drugless Practitioners, phone 888-764-AADP.
For people already pursuing a health career, such as Nutrition, Chiropractic, or Massage Therapy, who would like to expand their practice into Health Coaching, there are many organizations providing Coach training, such as International Coach Federation, Coachville, and others that can be found through an Internet search.
Health Coaches’ specialties vary. They may focus on stress, athletes, a particular illness, weight loss, eating disorders, digestive disorders, etc. All clients can expect to take a close look at their wholelife, everything from food, to career, to their support network.
Health Coaches emphasize the healing power of food, but do not prescribe to a particular diet or way of eating. The goal is to find what works for each individual based on his or her body and lifestyle. Coaches act as a catalyst for change and guide a person to make his or her own decisions. Change depends on the motivation of each client. A Health Coach provides support through a gradual process, typically over six or more months.

One client discovered that before working with her Health Coach, her entire life had been devoted to what other people wanted. She was thrilled to begin exploring what she wanted/needed and making decisions based on that. “Incredibly empowering,” she reported.
Another client realized how critical of her body she was. She was asked to experiment by not using her full-length mirror for a few days. She was amazed at how different she felt when she didn’t use it. No longer did she scrutinize herself head to toe, but she became more aware of how she felt rather than how she looked.
